Practice Concentration & Experience The Honourable E. D. Bayda returns to the private practice of law after a distinguished career as a jurist both at the trial and appellate levels, and after having served for 25 years as Chief Justice of Saskatchewan.
Prior to his initial appointment to the Bench, he practiced primarily as litigation counsel, handling cases at all levels of court in Saskatchewan and in the Supreme Court of Canada. He ended the first phase of his legal career as senior partner of the firm Bayda, Halvorson, Scheibel & Thompson.
In September, 1972, he was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench. He served as a judge of that court until December of 1973, when he was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. He was appointed Chief Justice of Saskatchewan in April of 1981, and held that position until he retired from the Court in 2006.
During his judicial career, the Honourable E. D. Bayda served as commissioner for the Vancouver Port Grain Handling Industrial Inquiry, and as chairman of the Cluff Lake Board of Inquiry. During his professional career, he served as a bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, as a member of the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan, as past president of the Regina Bar Association, and as past chairman of the Civil Justice Section of the Canadian Bar Association.
The former Chief Justice of Saskatchewan is a frequent lecturer to legal organizations, and serves as a senior counsel and advisor to the firm.
